Breaking the ICE: The Intersection of Immigration Status and Domestic and Sexual Violence
Wednesday October 23, 2024 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
The intersection of immigration status and domestic and sexual violence (referred to here as DSV) presents unique challenges, obstacles, and considerations for survivors. Immigrant communities experience DSV at rates that meet or exceed those of the population as a whole. Immigrant communities also experience the convergence of many other risk factors for DSV including inadequate education, past victimization and prior trauma, financial vulnerability, inexperience with cultural norms in the United States, and racism. Where a noncitizen is the survivor of DSV, an abuser may often use the noncitizen’s immigration status as tool to further violence, including threats of deportation and reporting to immigration officials and isolating the noncitizen from available resources, including law enforcement.    This presentation will seek to explain the confluence of immigration status and DSV through a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive lens. We will explain the ways that immigration status may be a risk factor for DSV and, importantly, what types of immigration relief are available to noncitizen survivors of DSV. We will address how service providers can further equitable access to help through language access and culturally responsive practices.

The Internal Struggle: Finding Compassion for Abusers While Supporting Survivor-Centered Advocacy
Wednesday October 23, 2024 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
Abuse interventionists are advocates for survivors of domestic violence. Working with perpetrators of abuse takes a special set of skills aimed at balancing compassion for people who have caused harm as well as simultaneously supporting the survivor experience.  This workshop uses reflection-based writing, lecture, and discussion to examine these concepts. As practitioners, you will analyze beliefs that will help you balance accountability, compassion, or even empathy when working with any individual who has caused harm to others. Attendees will also think critically about their engagement in survivor centered domestic violence advocacy/intervention.

Healing Together: An Affinity space for BIPOC Individuals to Explore Identity, Accountability & Empowerment
Wednesday October 23, 2024 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
This session welcomes attendees who identify as Black, Indigenous, and or People of Color (BIPOC) to learn from a panel of diverse professionals as they share how their identities influence their pathways in life. Attendees and panelist will explore what it takes to actualize authenticity, wellness, and resiliency in their lives and careers. This interactive session offers an opportunity to connect, build community, and share experiences and perspectives in a way that honors our unique journeys.

While we deeply appreciate all allies and those who support BIPOC communities, this space is intended exclusively for those who identify as BIPOC (non-White). Our aim is to provide a space where participants can feel completely safe and understood based on shared cultural experiences. We encourage our non-BIPOC friends and supporters to explore other ways of showing solidarity and allyship, and we’re happy to suggest spaces where those conversations can happen. Thank you for understanding and for your continued support. Together, we will work towards innovating supportive spaces.

“But I don’t feel like I have privilege!” The intersections of classism and male privilege among men who abuse
Wednesday October 23, 2024 10:30am - 11:45am EDT
Many men in the Abuse Intervention Programs (AIP’s) are resistant to material, but perhaps no topic brings about as much controversy as male privilege. Participants may feel like a victim to the court systems, their jobs, and grander political schemes. They carry profound misconceptions about feminism and often refuse to introspect the ways in which patriarchy harms them, much less those marginalized in society. Many poor and working class men have sexist ideology engrained from birth, and yet they do not realize the supposed privileges patriarchy grants them in their work or social settings. He may constantly feel like a failure, blaming himself and the women around him for not living up to the patriarchal ideal. As bell hooks quotes in The Will to Change, “As long as he is attacking women and not sexism or capitalism, he helps to maintain a system that allows him few, if any, benefits or privileges. He is an oppressor. He is an enemy to women. He is also an enemy to himself. He is also oppressed.” Our interpersonal interactions are rife with control, from the boss to workers, owner to producer, landlord to tenant, teacher to student, and governor to governed. In an act of displacement, many men unconsciously displace the controlling atmospheres of their work onto their wives, children, and/or pets. Socialization from male capitalists ensures that exploitation and oppression happens in the home, not in the workplace. Intervention groups can redirect attention to the oppression of authoritarian hierarchy embedded within patriarchy and capitalism, thus combatting the beliefs of scapegoating abused victims. The stated proposal seeks to analyze sociological perspectives on abuse and gain insight into tactics to understand male privilege among men who abuse.

Disrupting Gender-Based Violence from Within
Wednesday October 23, 2024 1:00pm - 2:15pm EDT
While there is much to say about the support gender-based violence organizations strive to provide to survivors, it should be stated that much of that work has been external. This workshop will provide participants with the A, B, C’s of disrupting gender-based violence through organizational and personal work to create a more just and equitable culture. In order to better serve survivors, organizations must look internally at the policies, systems, and beliefs held that are harmful to the clients they serve. Through Awareness, Belonging, and Change, gender-based violence organizations can become Disruptors and deepen their support of survivors.

We will offer tools and opportunities for reflection to access the power sharing in these spaces created by adults for youth. Wednesday October 23, 2024 4:00pm - 5:15pm EDT
In cases where a survivor does not feel safe or supported in testifying at trial, the voice of the survivor can  still be heard. Advocates who spend every day working with survivors through their trauma and healing can  provide knowledge and context when discussing the issue of intimate partner violence, counteracting the myths  and misconeptions that often lead to a lack of accountability for partners causing harm. This workshop will  explore the legal basis that allows advocates to testify and the communication strategies that advocates can use  when called upon to testify. The facilitators will also discuss some common dos and don'ts to help advocates  grow comfortable with the process of testifying in court.

Fundraising is daunting, and working with survivors in so many multi-faceted ways can be hard to explain. Creating a case for support that is simple and engaging is key!   In this session Adam and Julie will teach you how to build a simple case for support you can use to unify your storytelling, find the most compelling asks for your organization, and aid your fundraising efforts—whether it is grant writing, individual giving, or a gala event!   Your case for support will make it all make sense.   This will be a working session. We All Belong Here: Promoting Social Inclusion to Prevent Violence
Wednesday October 23, 2024 4:00pm - 5:15pm EDT
At the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, we believe that inequities in power between groups of people in our communities support and tolerate multiple forms of violence. We recognize that these social hierarchies play out across multiple identities—gender, ethnicity, orientation, age and ability among many others—resulting in disproportionate experiences of violence among marginalized groups.
We believe that social exclusion emerges from these hierarchies and is an indicator of inequity in our communities.

While we work to address the social expressions of inequity, we believe that it’s also critical to change the deeper roots of the problem by addressing the structures, policies and practices that sustain divisions.
With this workshop, participants will engage in an interactive activity to connect with one another and with their own experiences of social exclusion. Next we will discuss the connections between social exclusion and violence. Finally, participants will engage in the “Fun for All” activity from ICADV’s prevention toybox to generate strategies for creating community spaces with structures, policies, practices and norms that support full, safe and equitable participation for all community members.
