Code of Respectful Conduct:
The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence convenes our Fall Conference so professionals who work to prevent violence or serve those affected by intimate partner violence may come together in a supportive environment to share expertise, receive continuing education, and build and engage with professional networks.

Before we create safe, stable and nurturing environments in the world around us, we must create them within our own professional spaces. With this in mind, we are committed to creating an inclusive and respectful space for all participants. We seek to promote our collective growth by holding one another in supported accountability.

To provide all participants – attendees, facilitators, exhibitors, staff, and volunteers – the opportunity to benefit from the conference, ICADV asks all participants to follow the following guidelines.

Allow people to self-identify;
  • Do not make assumptions about others’ identities (including pronouns)
  • If you are unsure how someone wants to be identified, just ask “how do you identify?” or “What pronouns / racial identifiers do you use?”
  •  ‘Person of color’ or ‘Queer’ can be unifying and positive terms, but people may prefer their specific chosen terms / identities are used. When in doubt, use the language the person from that community/identity chooses to use
  • Recognize no term works for everyone, and language and meaning are continually changing
  • Gently hold others in the group accountable if they misgender or misidentify someone who has shared their identity
Come with an open mind;
  • Recognize we all enter this space at different places on our path
  • Be willing to both learn and teach with patience and compassion
  • When someone makes a mistake, invite correction with forgiveness
Be mindful of our diverse collaborative;
  • Speak slowly & clearly to help reduce language barriers
  • Accommodate all physical needs and abilities
  • Let people decide for themselves which restroom they use.
  • Be mindful of your privilege and share the physical and verbal space
Understand that we will do harm as we work to do better;
  • Have a plan on how to express or address harm done or done to without defensiveness.
  •  Engage in hard conversations with an eye towards moving all of us forward.
Facilitators and participants should frame discussions as openly and inclusively as possible and be aware of how language and images may be perceived and received by others.

We ask all participants to respect these guidelines. Ultimately, “mess up, fess up, clean up.”
